Pilates for Wellbeing

Alison Jepp teaches private and shared sessions in a Pilates studio using equipment designed by Joseph Pilates and matwork classes in the Body Control Pilates® method. Classes are held at the Sutton Junior Tennis Centre in Rose Hill, Sutton, Surrey.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise method suitable for everyone. It improves your posture by working to address muscle imbalances and realign your body. It increases strength and flexibility, toning your muscles and changing your body shape. It leaves you with a sense of wellbeing, feeling stronger, taller and more confident.

The Body Control Pilates® method is designed so that you can start slowly and safely even if you suffer from low back pain, arthritis or osteoporosis. Having learned the fundamentals, you will use these as you progress doing variations of exercises that even professional athletes would find tough. Whatever your fitness level, you will benefit from doing Pilates.

How do I start?

If you are new to Pilates, you should start with an initial consultation, which will cover:

  • Your history, including occupation, hobbies, sports, past injuries and illnesses
  • Your posture
  • Fundamentals of Pilates
  • Some basic exercises to introduce you to the method

You should wear comfortable clothes that allow unrestricted movement. I recommend a close fitting T-shirt or leotard and leggings for ladies and cycling shorts or tracksuit bottoms for men. These enable me to better assess your postural alignment. You do not need footwear, just socks or bare feet.

As with starting any other new form of exercise, it is prudent to consult your doctor before starting Pilates, especially if you have any health concerns, such as heart trouble, recent surgery or back pain.

To progress, choose from private or shared sessions in the studio or mat classes. Note that you may need more than one private session before you are ready to fully participate in a class.

Your initial consultation will last one hour and cost £40
